ICOLD is an international professional organization in the field of large dams first established in 1928. Its primary goal is to encourage its members towards making improvements in the building of dams that not only encompass the design and construction process but also the holistic maintenance of dams. This goal is supported by the routine activities of the organization such as its Annual Meetings, Technical Committee Meetings, and Congress (held every 3 years). These activities serve as a platform for its members to exchange information on the development and the newest technology of dams that is current in their respective countries. The establishment of ICOLD was a result of the lack of medium for its members to obtain information regarding dams safety which at the time was paramount as the failure of dam constructions were causing unnecessary human casualties. At the time it was established, ICOLD had only 26 member countries. To date 82 member countries are registered under ICOLD with over 7000 members.
